Staying Fit Through the Holidays: Thanksgiving

Hey all!

So, of course, around this time of year, fitness magazines, websites, friends and family are all discussing how to not gain weight or get out of shape over "the holidays." I just wanted to briefly offer a couple of tips as we head into Thanksgiving and holiday gatherings.

1. Prepare. Think ahead about how you want to feel after your meal. Most of us don't feel great when we are completely stuffed and our pants need to be unbuttoned at the top, right?? So, imagine just being satisfied at the end. Also, no matter how busy you are the day before, get some activity in!!

2. DO NOT restrict your intake before the meal!!! I repeat, do NOT restrict before the meal! Have a healthy, light, breakfast and lunch leading up to the Thanksgiving (or other holiday) meal. If you don't eat, or eat very little leading up to the "big" meal, you are likely to actually over-eat once you get to dinner. Also, your metabolism will come to a screeching halt, which is never a good thing!

3. Indulge in moderation. I know at Thanksgiving there's usually an entire spread of delectable comfort foods and goodies! My aunt's house is where we have Thanksgiving dinner, and the food is AMAZING!! While Thanksgiving is certainly (in my opinion) not the time to diet, I would suggest eating as you normally would. What I choose to do is try a little bit of everything I want. Rather than filling up three plates of my favorites, I go for one plate and get a little of everything... in my case, possibly more than a little of my Auntie's mac & cheese. It's too good!! 

4. Get ACTIVE afterwards!! For example, a couple years ago, my family started a tradition of going bowling in the evening after dinner an dessert. No, it's not a terribly intense workout, but it does get your blood flowing and it's a fabulous activity for any amount of people at almost every age! So if you are someone who has the ability to introduce a new tradition to your family, do so. If not, why not bundle up and get a group of family members or friends to take a stroll around the neighborhood together after you eat. These are fun things to do together, that gets you active and gets your metabolism moving. If any of you try this, I would love to hear about it!!

  1. During this time of year it's even more difficult sometimes because of holiday travel,etc. But I think i've finally developed a good system through the years, for me I am quite a morning person so exercise in the AM totally helps. Happy holiday dear! xxoo
