It Started With a Tweet...

A few months ago I noticed a follower on my Twitter called StylePointPDX. If you don't know, PDX is Portland, Oregon, where I live. Anyway, I decided to follow back. Some time later I noticed a tweet from StylePointPDX, asking if anyone was interested in writing for them about local fashion. I decided to take the leap after looking at the site. I sent a DM telling them I was, in fact interested. Melissa, the founder of Style Point, emailed me that she had taken a look at my blog and loved it. She told me she would be contacting me soon. So here we are a couple of months, a meeting and many emails later, and Melissa asked the other day if I would like to write my first post on shoe trends for Spring 2011. Um, yes, please!

StylePoint Portland

Before I give you the link to my post, let me tell you a bit about Style Point Portland. Melissa's goal is to basically provide a place to go online to stay up to date with the latest fashion trends, boutique openings, fashion shows, up-and-coming designers, etc. in Portland, OR. Since the only site that was providing this service in Portland had shut down, she decided to get started with that. She has now recruited myself and another young lady in Portland, to contribute and we are just getting started! I know most of my readers are not local to Portland, but I still recommend checking the site. A lot of the content will be relevant to you regardless. Ok, I'm done with my overview, now go look for yourself! Here's the link to my post, Spring Shoe Trends! Check it, friends! And if you have something to say, leave us some love.

FBFF ~ Fitness & Fashion

Katy over at ModlyChic, is the founder of Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday {FBFF}. Each week, Katy puts some thought provoking questions together and emails them to us. On Friday we all post our responses. It's s a fun, diverse and creative blog community! If you're interested in being a part of this fabulous group, head over to Katy's FBFF page for details!

Fitness & Fashion
1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why?
Yes, I do! My parents started me in swimming when I was a baby and gymnastics at 6 years. I have kept my own routine outside of my sport consistently since about 9 or 10 years of age. Currently, I am going through a medical condition - detailed here - and my dr. is unable to clear me for exercise until it's resolved *sad face* However, normally I lift about 5 days a week and do cardio 6 days a week. My cardio workouts vary. Usually including 1 or 2 long {up to 90 minutes} runs a week, high intensity {intervals or stairs} 2-3 days a week, and some power yoga and other miscellaneous cardio workouts mixed in. I stretch and do abs 6-7 days a week. I am still stretching and doing abs right now.
Reasons why I work out:
  • being fit keeps me feeling energized
  • being fit helps me manage stress
  • being fit keeps me accountable to eat clean
  • being fit is good for my body physically
  • working out helps get me out of a bad mood
  • being fit makes me feel good about my body

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image?
Working out absolutely helps with my body image!! When I am working out regularly I struggle significantly less with body image than when I am not. To be honest, since my doctor has recommended physical inactivity for me, I have been struggling more than usual with this. Like most women, I have my share of days where I feel "blah" about my body. Usually I am able to get over those quickly by getting even a quick, light workout in. Right now, since I don't think working out against doctor's orders are worth it, I am getting more creative with managing those feelings. It's a good opportunity to learn how to value myself for reasons other than what my body is capable of or looks like. I have to focus on the ways I can serve and love others, growing in my relationship with God, and valuing the many other strengths I have that are unrelated to my physique.

3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion?
When I run I usually wear Nike Tempo* shorts. I have been wearing those for workouts for years! They are light and comfortable. I sometimes run in running tights as well. Yoga pants are another favorite of mine. I wear those of course, for running, but also some of my lifting workouts. I also have some little cotton shorts that I've had since high school!! They are so comfortable and fit so perfectly that I just can't get rid of them! I usually wear those for at-home workouts, though.

tempo shorts
*tempos are so comfortable to run/workout in. However, you can always find them on sale! Don't ever buy them at full price! Whenever I need some, I just Google them, and some site always has them at a discount. Right now you can find them cheaper here.

I have to say both functionality and fashion are important to me when I'm working out. I don't have to match perfectly or anything, but I do like my exercise attire to coordinate most of the time. I would say if I had to choose one, functionality would win though. I tend to do some intense workouts, so I would rather mismatch than be uncomfortable for miles and miles of running!

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness?
I feel like there is definitely a cultural perception of what I should look like physically. However, our culture in America overall, is disturbingly sedentary and unhealthy. We have one of the laziest cultures in the world {1/3 of the US population is obese and the leading cause of death here is heart disease}, and our eating habits are terrible. I mean, have you noticed how expensive it is to buy REAL food at the grocery store?!? Given that information, the cultural perception of what you should be doing doesn't seem to be much. Which is interesting when you think about what our culture says a woman, or a man, should look like. The two are quite contradictory.

5.  Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal.
My dream is to run a marathon. I certainly have the drive and physical fitness to do it, but my knees will not allow me to. I have had bad knees for years and after running several miles, I have to cross train for at least a week for them to recover. Sometimes it's even difficult to walk after one of those runs. I am not sure my knees would make it through. I have thought about doing a triathalon instead.

If you are interested in fitness, or have never been but would like some motivation and tips to get started, please come back for Fit Tuesdays! Each week I post something fitness related on Tuesday {to see past Fit Tuesday posts go here}. I love to get reader requests for these posts, so if you have a request or question, go ahead and email me: krystlesstyle[at]gmail[dot]com, or  Formspring me, and I will get back to you!

Fit Tuesday ~ High Intensity Intervals

It's Fit Tuesday time again!!

I found myself grinning as I started to type this post! I guess I'm excited to talk a little fitness with you all today! Hopefully later this week I will get some fashion in as well.

So, today I want to talk about cardio. I am one of those people who loves to go on a long run for over an hour {once or twice a week}. However, I know that's not for everyone. You're in luck because shorter cardio workouts with higher intensity are actually really great for your body! I want to give you some ideas for higher intensity cardio with a shorter duration.

Bryan Stevenson Photography

Intervals- short bursts of intense exercise with periods of recovery in between

1. Head over to your local high school track*
Warm Up
Jog or speed walk 5-10 minutes to get warmed up.

Work Out
Sprint 100m, Jog/Walk 200m x 3
Sprint 200m, Jog/Walk 400m x 2
Repeat 6 times for beginners, Repeat 10-12 times if you are already in shape.

Cool Down
Jog or speed walk 5-10 minutes.

*if there isn't a track available near you, choose a flat area to run on. Substitute 100m for 15-20 seconds and 200m for 30 seconds

2.* Find a flat section of road, or hit the track or treadmill.
.Warm Up
Jog or speed walk 5-10 minutes

Speed up to a hard but sustainable effort for 30 seconds. Jog or walk to recover for 60 seconds.
Repeat four times if you are a beginner, Repeat 10-12 times if you are already in shape.

Cool Down
Jog or speed walk 5-10 minutes
*from Women's Health Magazine Online

Why Intervals?
  • you keep your muscles working hard
  • your body burns calories less efficiently than with longer, moderate runs, therefore burning more calories
  • increased metabolism after the workout

As always, keep your workouts varied. Don't do this workout every day, mix in some other cardio throughout the week as well.

Are you familiar with interval workouts??
What are you doing to be active today??

Floral, Linen and an Easter Bunny Panic Attack

linen wide leg trousers - VS Online

gold bracelet - Target

Happy Easter to you all!

I have a true story to share with you about my Easter morning. As many of you know, I'm on the last 24 hours of spending a week with my god children while their parents are in Las Vegas. Nina is 10, but she seems younger. As the baby of the family, she's definitely "The Baby" if you know what I mean. Anyway, I had planned on getting to the store for treats at some point before today to have some little baskets for them on Easter morning. Needless to say, that was the one thing I just didn't get done. And when it occurred to me last night, I was far too exhausted to go out to the store again.

Anyway, this morning I was getting ready for church with Dayna {15}, and Nina runs into the room exclaiming, "Krystle, the Easter Bunny didn't come last night!" with tears in her eyes. Then she ran away down the hall with her hands over her face. I froze and looked at Dayna. She whispered, "She still believes in the Easter Bunny." Still, I'm frozen. I hadn't had my coffee and I just couldn't think on my feet yet. I decided when Nina reentered the room I would have to break the news that there is no Easter Bunny. Good thing she has Jesus, I thought. But I wanted to cry. I just felt really awful that I would have to start the day sharing such devastating news with my sweet, innocent Nina. Then Nina comes back in laughing!! I could have died! I couldn't believe it!! She got me good. Really good! So that was how this fine day began.

Panic over the Easter Bunny.

How was your Easter Sunday?
Do you have any special traditions?
Do you not celebrate at all?

My family usually has some traditions, but this year was very different as my oldest brother is getting married in two months, so he was with his fiancĂ©e's family, and I am here with the kiddos. I took the kids to church, and then their aunt, cousins and precious grandmother came over to the house. Their grandma made an amazing Easter lunch for us and she did an egg/candy hunt with the kids. Then we all read some scripture together about Jesus' love for us. Now we are just having a chill day before I throw a "cleaning party" with the kids tonight in preparation for their parents to return home tomorrow night. Hopefully ordering a pizza for the "party" will help motivate them!

Oh, I want to extend a huge thank you to my readers! Yes, YOU!!
Today marks six months since I started my blog!
Here is my very first blog post. I've come a long way and I want to thank each of you for the constant support, encouragement and inspiration!
It has been a crazy, fun adventure so far and I am looking forward to many more!

Cheers to you!

Channeling the 70's

check out my shellac nails!!

embellished tank - ON
flared capris - f21 {gifted}
platforms - Dany by Jessica Simpson

Hey everyone! Today I am channeling the 1970's with my flare capris and platforms! I love these capris!! A friend of mine gave them to me back when we were in college. I am so glad too, because they are a great piece! No one else has them and they are so trendy! Don't you think? I can create so many different looks with them. Expect to see a lot of these babies over the next few months!

See how SUNNY it is today?? I am L-O-V-I-N-G it! Totally loving it! Sunshine makes me so happy! I think I just might lay out this afternoon! I still have the kids and we are having a pretty chill day. We are just enjoying the sun together. We were supposed to go to some basketball games that my goddaughter was playing in, but she's sick, unfortunately. So we are just hanging around in the sunny, gorgeous yard! Also, the Portland Trailblazers are playing inGame 4 against the Dallas Mavericks today. Another home game and I am really hoping we win!! Ahhh, we have to win!! I'm so excited to watch it!

In other news, have any of you tried Shellac? My godkids' mom, Sabrina, has a salon in her house, and although she only does hair, she is able to buy all of the supplies at cost from the supply store. The other night one of the girls did mine for me. I was a little nervous about doing them in white. I've never painted my nails this color, but I've been wanting to try it. So we did the first coat in white, and put a clear pink on top, which toned the white down just a bit. I think they turned out really good!

The cool thing about it is, it only took about 30 minutes and they are literally dry by the time you're finished painting them! It's so cool, because you don't have to worry about smearing them on anything! I think that's my favorite part about it. I'm super clumsy so I always end up smearing my brand new manicure on something no matter how careful I am. Shellac was made for me! Also, I hear it's easier to remove than acrylic, and it doesn't leave your nails thin and brittle once you take it off. Double win in my book!

Have you tried shellac? Do you want to try it?
Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?

FBFF ~ Inspiration

Katy over at ModlyChic, is the founder of Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday {FBFF}. Each week, Katy puts some thought provoking questions together and emails them to us. On Friday we all post our responses. It's s a fun, diverse and creative blog community! If you're interested in being a part of this fabulous group, head over to Katy's FBFF page for details!

To further mark one year of FBFF we are going to answer the same set of questions asked this time last year as I think they are still pertinent today and usually ever changing.

a : a divine influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive and communicate sacred revelationb : the action or power of moving the intellect or emotionsc : the act of influencing or suggesting opinions
: the act of drawing in; specifically : the drawing of air into the lungs
a : the quality or state of being inspiredb : something that is inspired <a scheme that was pureinspiration>
: an inspiring agent or influence
— in·spi·ra·tion·al adjective
— in·spi·ra·tion·al·ly adverb
1. Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?
I don't have any particular celebrities that I look to for inspiration regularly.

2. When it comes to your own personal style, what inspires you?
my first time with white nails & shellac last night!
When it comes to my personal style, I am inspired by anything that goes outside of the box. I tend to be classic, and lack creativity by nature, so anything that pushes that boundary. Anything that makes me feel beautiful and original inspires me.
3. How do you hope to inspire your readers?
First off, I'm not sure I am inspirational, but I can only strive for, and hope that I am! Hopefully my readers feel my passion for fitness and are inspired to explore fitness in their own lives. I want them to feel confident and challenge themselves to find ways to incorporate physical fitness into their own lifestyles. I want readers to see the results manifest themselves in each aspect of their lives {physical, mental, spiritual, emotional} including fashion. I want them to see that when they take care of their bodies in practical ways, it will likely spill over into the way they feel about themselves and the way they style their outward appearance overall, positively.

4. Outside the realm of fashion who/what inspires you?

5. And since Idol is ending… Which songs inspire you?
Wow, I love music, so if I actually named songs this post may never end! Since I love so many different genres of music, I would have to say, the songs that inspire me can vary at any given moment. Basically, anything that makes me laugh, smile, cry or remember.

I want to know, what inspires YOU?

Game #3 Go Blazers!

sequin tank - Target
brown vest - BCBG {borrowed}
jeans - Express
sandals - Michael by Michael Kors
earrings - AE

Hey!! How is this for a relaxed, Thursday look? I'm wearing my MK sandals again. I love these shoes!! They are so comfortable. And so are these jeans. For the most part, I'm a designer jeans junkie,  but these are really cozy and have a great fit. The fact that they are affordable too definitely makes them a favorite pair! Oh, and you'll probably be seeing my hair up for the next few days! I'm not used to this whole having kids thing! I'm all for quick and casual right now! Ha.

I decided to do the outfit shoot on the sport court in honor of Game 3!! For those of you who don't care know, tonight is Game 3 {of 7} of Series 1 of the NBA Playoffs, for my team- the Portland Trailblazers! We lost the first two games that we played in Dallas, but tonight the Mavericks are here and I am really hoping we get the job done and take home the "W." Rip City, baby!!

On the agenda for this evening is to make dinner for the kids. Last night I just threw random stuff together, so tonight I'm making grilled chicken, rice and asparagus. Then we'll have some treats and watch the Blazer game. Lucky for me, the kids are huge Blazer fans, so we will have some quality time watching the game in the theatre downstairs! I can't wait!!

Do you follow any sports?
If so, which ones? Who's your favorite team?

Spring is finally here!
I thought I would post an outfit since I haven't done that in probably a week?? My bad! But, I think the fact that I did it outside makes up for it, no?

Um... let's play a game- It's called, "Pretend this sweater does NOT make Krystle look pregnant!"
I'm not sure what's up with that, but this sweater seems to not photograph very well as far as bunching up in the middle. My stomach is probably my favorite body part, but it looks like I'm with child here! Anyway, I'm not. Carry on...

Let's also pretend I'm not squinting and making awkward faces. Thanks so much!

the sun was bright! no complaints here!

Even thought it's not exactly super warm out, I just really needed a Spring-like outfit! I love the floral in this tier skirt {also worn here} and the pop of color in the sweater! Doesn't this outfit just scream Springtime?!

In other news, if you follow me on Twitter you may have seen that I have my godchildren for the next 6 days! Pray, send warm thoughts, etc... whatever it is you do, send it my way! Haha! I absolutely adore these kiddos! The last time I watched them for a whole week and they were ages >1 year to about 8 years and there were four of them. Now the oldest is 19, so although she lives at home mostly, she's in college and doing her own thing. The others are 15, 13 and 10. I definitely have a full schedule of getting them off to school in the mornings, going to work myself, getting them from school and to multiple lacrosse and basketball practices and games, etc. Oh, and cooking real meals! Whew! Who knows what the blog will look like over the next week!! Stick with me, friends!

The Outfit:
yellow tank - f21
tiered skirt - Jessica Simpson Collection
sweater - Old Navy
denim blazer - Gap
sandals - Michael by Michael Kors

What's the weather like where you are??
Sunny and warm?? Rainy? Snowy??

Fit Tuesday ~ A Handful of Fit Tips!

Hey!! How are you all doing on this fabulous, sunny {in Portland} Tuesday?!

Can you tell the sun makes my mood sooo warm and happy??! It does!!

So, today I thought I would share a handful of tips on overall wellness and fitness. I have a wealth of knowledge I feel I should be sharing it all with you!!

1. Vary your workouts!! This is especially important if you are trying to lose weight. When you keep your workouts the same day after day, your body gets more conditioned to that particular workout, thus not working as hard to burn calories and even toning. So if you love running, for example, go ahead and run, but mix it up. Do a long run at a steady pace one day, and perhaps a high intensity hills workout the next. Or mix it up completely... go to Zumba, then run, then bike and lift, swim, aerobics, yoga, etc. There are so many ways you can keep your activities varied. If you have some limitations or would like more ideas please let me know!! I would love to help!

2. Give your muscles adequate time to recover! This is tre importante! When you are resistance training {weights} give your muscles at least 24 hours to recover before working the same muscles again. If there are certain exercises or muscle groups that you prefer to do daily, go ahead, but use your body weight only. For example, sit-ups, push-ups, and lunges, are all safe to do daily, but without additional weight.

3. Snack! Don't let yourself get too hungry throughout the day. This goes for weight loss or maintenance. When you go too long between meals, you can become ravenous, which can cause you to overeat. Also, your metabolism is likely to slow down to preserve energy. So if you're busy at school/work or taking care of your kiddos all day, make sure to pack some snacks in your handbag or desk.

Some examples of healthy snacks:
  • dried fruit {no added sugar}& nuts
  • apple slices & {natural} peanut or almond butter
  • fresh fruit and nuts
  • fresh fruit and yogurt {watch the sugar}

4. Drink water!!! I cannot stress this enough!! Being hydrated is so critical to your health! Get a large, reusable water bottle and keep that baby full! Always. If you loathe the taste of plain old water, try adding something refreshing to it for taste. I like slices of oranges and lemon in it. Cucumber slices or mint leaves are ultra refreshing as well. Keep slices in your water bottle all day, or a large pitcher in your refrigerator with slices of whatever you prefer in there. It's cheaper than Crystal Light packets and tastes great!

5. Watch sugar! I am definitely not a supporter of eradicating anything from your diet completely, however, it's important to keep your diet well-balanced. Sugar is one of those ingredients that is squeezed into a lot of foods! You would be surprised, really. They sneak it into so many different {processed} foods, and it's not healthy for your body to be ingesting all of that sugar. Check your labels and try to be mindful of what's going into your body. Some random places that don't need sugar, but you can often find it:
  • spaghetti sauce
  • canned soups
  • canned beans
  • canned vegetables
  • boxed foods
  • yogurt

The above are some that certainly don't need sugar, but it's often found in.  I wouldn't be too obsessive about labels, but I do think it's important to know what you're putting in your body. I will likely save more details on this for another post, but honestly, it's best to reduce the amount of processed foods in general, as much as possible.

Did you learn anything new today?
Is there one of these you want to work on more?
Any questions?

Be well!

Come back tomorrow for an outfit post!!

My favorites- Workin' it at home!

I hope everyone is having a great Saturday so far!

I thought I would share a few of my favorite essentials for getting a little at-home fitness in when you're around the house watching television or just don't feel like heading to the gym.

1. Yoga Mat- I am sure you are all familiar with these! I like to have this around for obvious reasons. I have hardwoods, so it's great to have a softer surface for stretching, abs, etc. I like to roll it out to stretch on while I'm watching television or talking on the phone. Yes, I've been known to put my friends on speaker while I stretch on the floor. Of course, the mat is also great for a yoga workout! One of my favs is the "Yoga Meltdown" dvd, with Jillian Michaels.

2. Light Hand Weights- I picked this set up for about $6.00 total at Target. Mine are only 5lbs because I'm a weakling! But the point is, whatever the weight you choose, these are great to have around the house. Once again, I love to pull them out to use during times that would otherwise be lazy, such as while the television is on. You can use them for arms of course, or to add extra resistance for leg exercises such as lunges or squats.

3. Balance Ball- I LOVE my balance ball!!! Mine actually came with a dvd that had some great moves that I even I hadn't previously tried. I didn't buy mine at Target, but I recently saw this same one there. I bought it for around $30.00 and have had it for about two years. It came with a pump, resistance band and a dvd. I use it all the time, so I would say it has certainly paid for itself! I primarily use mine for abs. I demonstrated one of my favorite ab moves in this post, and it's also great to do simple crunches on.

sorry about the glare- i took this with my Blackberry
What equipment do you like to use at home?

*an update on the blood pressure situation is, unfortunately it has not improved at this point. I'm definitely not happy about this! I'm following doctor's orders 100% and just praying things get better!

Be active this weekend!!

FBFF ~ Gratitude

Katy over at ModlyChic, is the founder of Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday {FBFF}. Each week, Katy puts some thought provoking questions together and emails them to us. On Friday we all post our responses. It's s a fun, diverse and creative blog community! If you're interested in being a part of this fabulous group, head over to Katy's FBFF page for details!

Today's post is all about GRATITUDE.
Prepare to gag a little. I am a touchy feely gal.
Can't help it! :)

1.  When it comes to me personally – I owe a lot of who I am to:
My parents/family. We have been through so much over the years. I am so proud of my parents for working through their marriage and getting through so much that would have and has broken other families up. I am so proud of them!! They have taught me so much about work ethic and determination as well. They didn't come from families with money- actually very much the opposite, but they have worked SO HARD in life, and I am so proud of their accomplishments!! I have learned dedication, commitment, work ethic, love and many other qualities from them. Also, God. I am by far imperfect, and I am so blessed to be loved by my creator, so much, no matter what.

2. When it comes to be professionally – I owe a lot of who I am to:
Well, I am in limbo professionally right now. But my college education {degree in Health Promotion & Education} is something no one can ever take from me. Also, some friends and mentors who have encouraged me through some rough years and really built me up! THANK YOU!!!

3. When it comes to the art of blogging, I’m grateful to these people for helping me through some rough spots:

Well, let's see here... there are a few of you who have supported my blog since the very first posts!!

Charee @ ChareeLenee
TM @ Paper Packages
Monica @ HomemadebyMonica

And some who are across the States but feel close to the heart!

Jessica @ Daly Authenticity
Eboni @ The Fashionista Next Door

4. One blogging challenge I’m grateful happened because it made me stronger was…
When my blog was still super new and my camera was stolen I reached out to Katy @ Modly Chic for some advice and she challenged me to step outside the box. Thanks, Katy!!

5. To my readers, I’d like to say…
THANK YOU!!! You all make this experience with blogging so much fun!! The support, the tweets, the laughs, the emails, the comments... all of it! So fun and I appreciate you more than you could ever know!! <3

Fit Style Bogger: Katy

So, I've been thinking lately about highlighting other style bloggers who share my passion for fitness. About a month ago I spotted Katy over at Think Pretty Thoughts through Everybody, Everywear. I was stoked to find someone else who loves fitness and caring for your body as well as some fierce, feminine style. This woman is gor-geous!! Anyway, she became a daily read for me and after awhile I decided to shoot her an email to see if she would be interested in being featured here to talk about her love for fitness. She said "yes!" Thanks so much, Katy!!
If you haven't seen her blog, definitely head over there after you read my interview with her!!

see what I mean?! beautiful.
go girl!

1.     When/how did you discover a passion for fitness?

Katy: About a year ago, I was feeling really “uncomfortable” with my body and the few extra pounds I had put on just by being lazy.  I decided to use unemployment to my advantage and hit the gym. I ended up falling in love with fitness after a few weeks and began really learning about how to workout for results. A year later, here I am, blogging about a passion I never knew I had, but even better, never knew I could do. Exercise is something anyone can be good at, all it takes is a little learning and patience!

2.     What made you decide to have fitness become an element of your blog?

Katy: I couldn’t help but mention fitness, it was so much a part of my everyday life after a while. People began commenting, asking how I “got my legs” and I eventually decided to spill the beans and share with the world I’m a self-proclaimed gym rat. I’m proud of it too, since not too long ago I was a blog-reading couch potato!

3.     How much time a week do you dedicate to working out and/or making sure you eat well?

Katy: I exercise at least 6 days a week.  I also prepare my meals, grocery shop, and go the extra mile to make sure I’m eating good clean foods that support my exercise habits. I’ve always been into healthy eating, so that was nothing new to me! However, I have a major sweet tooth. I’m talking serious sweet tooth!

4.     What is the biggest challenge for you, when trying to stay in shape? The easiest part?

Katy: Biggest challenge is definitely resisting sweets! I have a very consistent diet and exercise plan, but dang, when I see a cookie…it’s just bad. It’s definitely okay to reward myself, but if I didn’t practice self control…. desserts would be my every meal!

5.     In your life, how are fitness and fashion related to one another?

Katy: I think it’s about taking care of yourself! When I’m active and putting good things in, I want to reflect that and take care of the outside too. Fitness and Fashion are just another way I live my life to the fullest by nurturing the life God has given me!

6.   What is your best piece of advice for someone who wants to become more physically fit?

Katy: YOU CAN DO IT.  It’s really about sticking it out those first couple weeks, and then you’re in the habit. Heck, you might even enjoy it by that point!  I wrote about how I stay motivated here, and those are my tricks to dragging my butt in the gym. Hopefully they can help you too!

Is Katy not so inspiring!?! Don't you want to just grab your running shoes and put in work?!
Head over to her blog asap, and see what else she has to say and of course, check out her pretty, chic style! It's Vlog Week over there right as we speak... I would suggest backing up to Monday and checking them all out!!

A Different Kind of Fit Tuesday...

Hey! So I know I said there wouldn't be a Fit Tuesday this week, but I lied. This is a post I really went back and forth on... I wasn't sure how much I wanted to share or not share. Finally I came to the conclusion that sometimes sharing something a little more personal can pull others together and provide a place for support and encouragement. So, here goes!!

I have been forbidden to work out by my doctor. I know for some this wouldn't be a big deal, but it's really difficult for me. I'll back up a bit. For the past couple of months I have had a dangerously high blood pressure. The doctor was just giving my body time since it seemed unlikely that I was really going to have sustained hypertension. I mean, I'm young and in great shape. That just doesn't happen, right? Wrong. African Americans are genetically at a higher risk for hypertension and it turns out I have a family history of it. So, this is likely why I'm in this condition. The doctor started me on medication a few weeks ago, but my bp continued to soar. Now I've been strongly urged to rest, rest, REST. I am not to participate in anything that will increase my heart rate or blood pressure.

So, here I am, laying in bed typing this post feeling SO restless!! I am wondering, have you ever been in a situation where you needed to rest your body for your health or to heal from an injury?? What did you do with the extra time? How did you handle the extra stress of worrying about your health and not being able to run off the anxiety?

Did anyone workout anyway? Why?

Is anyone currently going through a period of resting your body? I would love to hear from you!!

I would love to hear some of your stories!! Also, I LOVE that many of you are participating in #bragbaby by tweeting me your workouts so I can RT them, and commenting on the FFF Facebook page with your workouts. Isn't it fun to inspire one another??

Resting & appreciating you all,

Everybody, Everywear ~ Maxi

maxi dress - Macy's
sandals - Target
ring - Target

I kind of love this dress!! I will never forget when I got it. I was at Macy's shopping with my mom last year. She pulled it and told me to try it on and we both loved it on me. She said I had to buy it!! But it was a little more expensive than I was prepared for so I declined. Well, the beauty of being the only daughter amongst a family of boys is that Mom simply insists to buy those have to have outfits! She just can't resist and I love it!! Thanks, Mom!!

Maxi Skirt/Dress | Everybody, Everywear

If you haven't heard, Everybody Everywear, is a blog event hosted by Linda at The Auspicious Life and Liz of 26 and Counting. On the second Tuesday of each month, there is a certain piece that everyone who participates will style and we all link back to the EBEW page so we can see how everyone styled their pieces. I think it's really fun!! The last two months were polka dots and the classic blazer. Go click on the EBEW icon to see how everyone else styled their maxi skirt/dresses!

Also, if you are wondering where Fit Tuesday is, I am still trying to figure out how I will work it in with EBEW Tuesdays. I will probably post later today. But either way there's a fun Fit Tuesday-type interview post that should be up on Thursday. I'm really excited to highlight other style bloggers who also share a passion for health and fitness!! Stay tuned!
