"How do I stick to my workout plan??" 2nd Edition

This series of posts was inspired by a couple of readers asking for advice on how to stick to a workout plan. 
Keep those questions coming!!
 I WILL answer them! Go ahead and ask in comments or by email: krystlesstyle [at] gmail [dot] com

First, let's review. Here's what we talked about last time:


1. Set Goals
2. Be Realistic
3. Be Accountable
4. Just Start

In no particular order, here is the 2nd Edition:


5. Reward Yourself- let me be clear. I am not saying that since you went out and ran some miles today, you should reward yourself with half a batch of brownies!! But if you set a fitness goal, for example, to do something active every day for 30 days, you get to buy that pair of Citizen's you've been eying all season.You decide. But make sure the reward:
  •  supports your initial purpose 
  •  is within your budget 
  •  is truly motivating
6. Prioritize- Do you forget to get dressed in the morning? Decide not to go to work {if you have a job} because you are just too stressed out? No, because these are priorities. When we have top priorities, we turn them into routines. Turn fitness into part of your daily routine. If you do this, not moving your body will not feel right. If it's important to you to be healthy, make exercise a priority today!


7. Do It Early- Don't procrastinate when it comes to working out. The more you put it off, the less likely you are to get it done. Either carve out time in your day before work, or do it as soon as you are finished. When I get home from work, I make myself just get up and go for it. I know if I spend too much time thinking about it I might get occupied by something else and opt out.


8. Find a Passion- Moving your body should be something you enjoy!! If you are hating it every single time, maybe the mode of exercise you have chosen just isn't for you. There is more than just running and elliptical machines. Swimming, racquetball, dance, zumba, aerobic classes, home videos/dvds, cycling, and the list goes on and on... it may take a bit of trial and error, but you will find something {hopefully a handful} of physical activities that fit your lifestyle and your heart! I want to try belly dancing.

***Are you a parent?? Well, don't worry, I didn't forget about you! I hear it can be a lot more difficult to devote time to a workout routine when you have little ones to care for. I plan to specifically address issues related to that next time around! With that in mind, If a parent would like to speak to some of the difficulties around this, I would love to hear from you!!   1. I once borrowed some belly dance videos from my cousin and LOVED them, so you should definitely try it, it's a great workout!

    Rewarding yourself is definitely important. When I had rejoined WW a few years ago, my husband (bf at the time) said he would take me shopping for every 5 pounds I lost. Just having something besides weight loss to work towards was fun!

    Other ideas for rewards: a pedicure, manicure, new CD (or purchase from itunes). But I personally like clothes as a reward because then you can see if you've gone down a size!

  4. I don't use any kickboxing dvds, but I do use Jillian Michaels' Yoga Meltdown dvd and I LOVE IT!! Highly recommend!!

  12. Great post, I love to see people inspiring others to get fit :)

    I'd like to add one to the list, register for something competitive, a race, join a sports league etc. I notice personally if I know I have a deadline and something to be accountable for, or others are relying on me, it motivates me the days I want to lay on the couch with a batch of brownies and watch bad tv!

  13. I really think that I need to get better at prioritizing and doing it early. I kept telling myself I would exercise today and it didn't happen. I will fix this (priorities!).

  15. love these tips!! I especially love the idea of rewarding yourself with things other than brownies :) i always think of a snack as a reward but tying shopping into it definitely makes the idea more enticing. <3

    I def. agree with finding something you are passionate about. I have tried many things and realized I LOVE kickboxing! I even got a bag... it's in my bedroom.

  17. I don't always get a chance to workout early in the morning but I work out after work. I also do exercises at my desk at work. During breaks I do leg lifts and squats every chance I get.
    Krystle these are great tips because there's always a plan for someone to be able to fit exercise in their routine because it's such a boost of energy inside and out. You do have to prioritize because it sets the course for the day.

    Great tips! My fave would have to be "find a passion." My commitment to fitness always comes and goes in waves (I'm currently on a high), but I always do my best when I truly love the activity I'm doing. Just running on a treadmill won't cut it for me since I find it too monotonous, so I turn to classes that my local gym offers. Right now I'm on a combo of Zumba (3x/week) and Pilates (2x/week) that is really making me feel great. And I figured that out by just trying a bunch of different classes, just like you suggest!
