FBFF ~ Feminism & Fashion

Katy over at ModlyChic, is the founder of Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday {FBFF}. Each week, Katy puts some thought provoking questions together and emails them to us. On Friday we all post our responses. It's s a fun, diverse and creative blog community! If you're interested in being a part of this fabulous group, head over to Katy's FBFF page for details!

fem·i·nism [fem-uh-niz-uhm]
–noun1.the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.2.sometimes initial capital letter an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women.3. feminine  character

1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a love for fashion?
Honestly, I think it depends on how you look at it. If you are looking at fashion from a perspective that treats women as objects being used to look a certain way in order to sell product, then yes - there is an incompatibility. However, if you love the art of fashion and the creativity of expressing oneself through it, there doesn't have to be. You can love fashion and value women.

2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?
My blog is not exclusively focused on topics related to fashion and beauty. It is also largely focused on fitness and women's health. I have weekly posts on taking care of and loving your body. At times I post on matters of character as well. On Fierce, Fabulous & Fit, I keep it as real as possible!

3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?
If women played a larger role in the fashion industry, advertising would certainly be impacted, in my opinion. I do think there would still be standards of beauty there, but I think it would look a whole lot different than it does now.

4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?
My self-image and mannerisms are absolutely influenced by my relationship with God. I believe He created each one of us exactly the way we are for a unique purpose. It's important for me to love and respect my body since it's the only one I get.

5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?
Clothing, makeup and hair absolutely help communicate the truth about myself!! When I am sure to put myself together, {i.e. well-groomed, dressed, fashionable and somewhat modest}, I am communicating that I love and respect myself as well as those around me. This question makes me think of when the illnesses I am battling had me very depressed and I wouldn't really get myself ready in the morning or put effort into my looks. I think then I was communicating that I didn't care or had given up on my body. I never want to be in that place again! One of the main reasons for my blog is to keep me on top of that.

What do you think would change in the fashion industry if women were in a more dominating role?

How do you communicate the truth about yourself through your appearance?

  1. I agree that you can love fashion and value women - nicely put! It would be fantastic to get more women into advertising - some of the editorials out there are pretty damaging!

  4. Krystle, I find it interesting that you're using your blog partially to keep you above that low point when battling illness. I can relate to that a lot. Mine helps me do the same thing, there's an accountability and the support of a community that keeps me going even when I don't really feel like it. What a great job you're doing with it, too!
